pacification - actions taken by a government to defeat insurgency



Recently I was sitting at a table at the Nanaimo Ferry terminal when a woman from Scotland next to me turns around and says,
“Isn’t this unbelievable?”
I looked at her with confusion as she waved the newspaper, The Globe and Mail about.
“There’s nothing but pictures!”
Granted I scarcely read the newspaper, I did notice the gradual transition from informative text to pretty pictures. I simply smiled and said,
“Visual pacification of the masses.”
Truth be told I’ve heard more about the death of Michael Jackson and his autopsy than I have about any sort of relevant news, other than the 2010 Olympics, which in my opinion, is a short sighted band-aid remedy for the economy.
Sure, it might bring 'x' amount of jobs, but what about the rest of the unemployed victims of the recession? In any case, I fail to see what pop culture does for the average person, why are not serious issues, like our environment, the mentally ill running about in Vancouver, why are we messing about with an Olympic city we cant even sustain?
Yes I realise it’s a happy long term plan that is supposed to bring tourists for years to come; by putting B.C. on the map they are guaranteeing the security of the economy. That’s all ideal and whatnot, but I wish they would pay attention to the people that actually live here presently.
Realistically, the voice of a starving artist doesn’t stir much other than pending irritation; without force [money and people] I can bitch incessantly but fact of the matter is nothing will change. No one really cares anyways; the working class has other issues on their minds, such as supporting their families. Slight inconveniences like global warming are of little consequence.
Perhaps the changes I am seeking are attainable, just not in my lifetime. I would love to see a Canadian government that actually supports the terminally ill; Insurance only covers your ass when you are healthy, once you are down and unable to work, you’d be surprised how quickly the fine print becomes bold and underlines the expenses of your treatment. I cannot wait for the day when education is easily attainable and tuition is a thing of the past; that with a little hard work, you could live a life of contentment.
There are so many subjects I would love to touch upon, but there is really no point.
